Basti

In the ancient healing science of Ayurveda, Basti (medicated enema therapy) is considered the most powerful treatment in the Panchakarma system — the five-fold detoxification and rejuvenation program. Rooted in centuries of wisdom, Basti is not just a colon cleanse; it's a holistic therapy that balances Vata dosha, promotes longevity, and restores inner harmony.
Basti is one of the most important therapies in Panchakarma, the five-fold purification treatment in Ayurveda, and is primarily used for the management of Vata dosha, which governs movement, the nervous system, and elimination. Vata, being dry, light, and mobile in nature, tends to accumulate in the colon (large intestine), and Basti therapy works directly in this region to restore balance. Often referred to as the "king of treatments," Basti involves the administration of medicated substances—such as oils, decoctions, or herbal pastes—into the rectum via enema.

Types of Basti

There are primarily two types of Basti therapies, both used strategically during treatment:
● Anuvasana Basti (Oil-based): Nourishing and strengthening, this type uses medicated oils to lubricate and soothe the colon.
● Niruha Basti: (Decoction-based): A cleansing enema using herbal decoctions, honey, rock salt, and oils to detoxify and remove accumulated toxins (ama).
In a full Panchakarma program, Basti is often given in a series for deep and lasting results.
